Martins Nursery - Buying a Garden Shed

Things to consider when buying a garden shed

Buying a shed can be a daunting experience, so I have written this short guide to help. Probably the first step is to decide which size you would like. Common sizes include 6 X 8 Feet, 8 X 8 Feet and 10 X 8 Feet. Remember when sizing you shed, to leave enough room between the shed and any obstacles such as fences, this will help when it comes to painting.

Once you have decided the size you require the next step is to decide which way you would like to door hinged. this is particularly useful as it can assist greatly with accessibility. Most shed makers will allow the door to be hinged either on the left or the right side. It's also useful to decide if you require a window in the shed, what side you would like it to be positioned and what size.

Most shed makers will have a range of thickness of timber to choose from for the walls of the shed. Its good to go with a reasonably think wood, say 19mm. This will help the durability of the shed, and help protect the contents from frost or moisture.

Next you should decide the colour finish you would like for the shed. You can usually choose from a range of colours, it's probably best to choose a colour that is in keeping with the colour of any other wood in your garden such as summer seats or wooden pots.

Typical costs

Garden shed can vary significantly in cost, depending on the size, complexity of design and the timber used in the construction. For example, for an 8 X 6 foot shed in reasonable thickness timber, with a window, I would expect to pay around £600. This cost will usually include delivery of the shed, as well and assembly.

Choosing a Suppliers

When choosing a suppler it's often best to go on recommendation from a friend. I would advise you visit at least 3 suppliers before making a decision. This will help you get a feel for the average cost and the design characteristics of each. If you live in Northern Ireland, I would highly recommend Sergeant Portable Buildings, located just outside Portadown (Tel: 028 3833 9547). My grandfather bought me a shed from there, and it has pride of place in my garden.

Maintenance

Sheds require little maintenance however you will need to do some basic DIY style tasks to help keep your investment in pristine condition. I would that you repaint your shed after the first 6 months, and then every 12 months after this. remember to always make sure you paint in dry conditions, summertime is best, avoid painting in the winter when the air is cols and moist.

Hope you found this guide helpful,
